James L. Layman, age 77, of Percival, Iowa, passed away on Friday, May 19, 2017, at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Lincoln, Nebr.
He was born on Sept. 16, 1939, in Hepburn, Iowa; the son of James Straut and Doris (Funk) Layman.  He graduated from Rockwell City High School with the class of 1957.  He was united in marriage to Phyllis E. Dukes on Dec. 1, 1958 in Nebraska City.
He worked at Sherwood Concrete for 15 years and then at American Meter for 19 years before retiring.  James was a member of the Percival Community Church and the Cushman Club of America. He was an avid race car fan!
James is survived by his wife Phyllis Layman of Percival; children:  Rhonda Shirley of Hamburg; Lisa Phillips and husband Jeff of Hamburg; five grandchildren:  Heather Garton and husband Matt of Bennington; Emily O’Rourke and husband Matt of Glenwood, Iowa;  Justin Phillips and wife Samantha serving in the U.S. Air Force in Guam; Joel DeLong of Kansas City, Mo., and Garett Phillips of Hamburg; five great-grandchildren:  Lauren, Elijah, Ryleigh, Claire and Edith; three sisters:  Pat Fritz of Omaha, Nebr.; Iona Sittig of Rockwell City, Iowa, and Joyce Boeck and husband Ron of Shenandoah, Iowa; other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters:  Marilyn Farris and Carolyn Hilton.
A Memorial Service was to be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 24, at the Percival Community Church in Percival with Pastor Blaine Pritchett officiating.   Burial was to follow in the Wyuka Cemetery at Nebraska City.
