Attorney General Jon Bruning today announced his Medicaid Fraud Unit recovered more than $6.1 million in 2011. Recovered funds reimburse the Medicaid program for losses and can be applied to legal fees specific to each case.

“In a balanced-budget state like Nebraska, we must make every taxpayer dollar count,” said Bruning. “This self-funded unit continues to yield millions in recovered funds while protecting our state taxpayers.”

Since its beginning, the Unit has recovered more than $45 million from violating service providers and drug companies.

In cooperation with the Nebraska Legislature, Bruning established the Unit in 2004 to investigate and prosecute Medicaid provider fraud and patient abuse.

When the Unit was established in 2004, AG Bruning promised the Legislature it would be self-funding in three years. The annual recoveries surpassed its operating budget starting in 2006, a year ahead of schedule.
