Recent census data shows that Syracuse's population has grown by 180 people in the last ten years. The last census in 2000 showed a growth of 116. The recent census puts Syracuse's total population at 1,942.
Syracuse has a history of growth. According to past census data, the only ten year period that Syracuse recorded a population drop was from 1900 to 1910 when the population dropped from 861 to 842. Since then Syracuse's population has been at an upward climb.
“A lot of the young families are returning,” said Syracuse Mayor Daniel Whitney. “It's not that far to commute to Lincoln or Omaha and they're going back to the small town where a lot of them came from.”
Carolyn Gigstad, executive director for the Syracuse Chamber of Commerce, said, “I think that Syracuse's population growth has been partly due to the progressive nature of our community. In the past 10 years or so we have had a new Senior Center, Aqua Center, middle school and ball complex built.”
Mayor Whitney said that when he was looking to move somewhere new 11 years ago, his family looked south of the Platte River down to Kansas City before deciding on Syracuse. “What brought us here was the school and the community... Syracuse also has two grocery stores, which is unique.” Mayor Whitney also said that local businesses have been holding their ground, which helps provide jobs to the community.
“Business is generally good and the housing market has been good,” said Gigstad. “A few businesses are soon going to open in town.”
“There's still a lot of potential for further growth,” said Mayor Whitney. “I hope the economy bounces back to where it can only get better.”
The 2010 census showed Avoca's population at 242, a loss of 28; Burr's population at 57, a loss of 9; Cook's population at 321, a loss of 1; Dunbar's population at 187, a loss of 50; Palmyra's population at 545, a loss of 1; Otoe's population at 171, a loss of 46; Talmage's population at 233, a loss of 35; Unadilla's population at 311, a loss of 31; and Douglas' population at 173, a loss of 58.
The population of Otoe County increased by 344 people between 2000 and 2010, putting the current population at 15,740.
