The occupants of an Oldsmobile Alero were hospitalized Monday afternoon after the car slammed into a farm tractor on Highway 50 south of Syracuse.
Accident investigators at the scene said the two in the car were talking to rescuers before transported to Syracuse Community Memorial Hospital. The driver of the Oliver 1655 tractor refused transport.
An Otoe County deputy at the scene said the driver of the Alero may not have seen the tractor until moments before impact. There were no pre-collision skid marks and the center of the car appears to have struck the driver's side tire of the tractor.
The collision smashed the metal of the car right below the seat area of the tractor and jettisoned the tractor wheel forward. The tractor slid without the wheel about 30 yards into the roadside ditch.
Chief Deputy Mike Holland encouraged drivers to be aware of farm machinery during the harvest season.
