Unadilla residents will celebrate Groundhog Day Saturday, Feb. 6.
All entries are welcome to enter the 23rd annual parade at 1 p.m. Parade entries are to enter at Dan’s Tire Shop by 12:15 p.m.
The Lincoln Sport Parachute Club will kick off the parade.
Rochelle Rohlfs, 1985 Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca High School graduate, is parade grand marshal. She will ride in the official Groundhog Auto, The Ford Falcon.
Last November, Rohlfs coached the Omaha Marian Crusaders to the Class A state volleyball championship. It was the second state championship coached by Rohlfs in her 21 years at Omaha Marian. Rohlfs has coached Omaha Marian to 16 state volleyball tournament appearances, including Class A runners-up in 2002 and 2005.
At S-D-A, Rohlfs played on the 1985 girls’ basketball Class B state tournament team and was a member of the 1985 Class B state champion track and field team.
Groundhog memorabilia and a silent auction are in the morning at the Unadilla school gymnasium. There is a craft fair, church bake sale, posting of the winners of the poster and story contest, entertainment by Darrel Draper and catering. The silent auction ends at noon. Proceeds go to the Unadilla Community Library. Groundhog shirts are available for sale.
A luncheon will be served at the Unadilla United Methodist Church from 11 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Biscuits and gravy, sandwiches, soup and desserts will be served.
The Unadilla Community Foundation is sponsoring a soup and jerky contest at the Duncan Building on Unadilla’s Main Street. Entries may be brought between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
After the soup contest is coronation of the Groundhog king and queen. King candidates are: Glen Isaacs, Joe Kreifels, Nick Liesemeyer, Marty Ramsey and Bob Wilhelm. Queen candidates are: Laurel Kreifels, Lisa (Fisk) Gonzalez, Amanda (Peterson) Dutton, Lori Berner and Karla Zahn.
Nominees may be reviewed and voted for in The Bar until 10:30 a.m. Feb. 6.
2009 royalty were Marcus Wilhelm and Nicki McWilliams.
At 2:30 p.m. in the school gymnasium, Don Ulrich will give a pictorial tour of Vietnam during and after the war. The presentation is sponsored by the Unadilla Area Foundation.
The Gary Reddin Band will perform at 4 p.m. at The Bar. All are encouraged to wear orange, the official color of Groundhog Day.
Unadilla was proclaimed Groundhog Capital of Nebraska in 1988 by Lt. Gov. William Nichol. A committee interested in promoting Groundhog Day had a wild game feed the Saturday closest to Feb. 2. There were 11 parade entries in 1990 and 59 entries in 2009. Unadilla residents have celebrated in temperatures ranging from below zero to last year’s 62 degrees.
