This year's Germanfest will offer event goers plenty of classic Germanfest activities along with some new ones that may soon become favorites.
Abendessen, Opening Event, will kick off Germanfest Friday evening, July 8, at the Green Room. The evening will include the Lil Miss Germanfest contest, German food, recognition of past royalty and the coronation of the 2011 royalty. Tickets are $15 for adults and $6 for children. Attendees are encouraged to buy them in advance. They may be purchased at AJ’s Coffee House, Added Touch, Do It Best, Extreme Images, Nest Feathers and the Chamber office.
New to Germanfest this year, the Viener Vogue fashion show is sure to become a favorite event. Judges will evaluate various costumes worn by participating viener dogs.
Located in the Green Room, the event offers festivalgoers the chance to cool off while watching dogs strut their stuff on the dogwalk. The event will take place at 4 p.m. Saturday. Proceeds from the event will go to Nebraska Doxen Rescue.
The viener dog races are one of the newest and most popular events at Germanfest. The races will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. To accommodate spectators, bleachers will be available during the races. The event drew a large crowd last year, and participants came from around the region.
Saturday afternoon will feature a beer garden, firefighters’ water fight, wine and microbrew tasting, kinder fun (activities for children), Main Stage Wackiness contests, a free watermelon feed sponsored by the Syracuse Area Chamber of Commerce, fest keg opening and entertainment from the Greg Blecha Trio and others.
At 2 p.m., The Helmat Tanzer Dancers & Die Singender Wandered Singers from the German-American Society of Omaha will entertain the audience. As a very special treat, dancers and singers will also join them from Denver and the Bavarian Region of Germany. The event is being sponsored by Potash Corp. – PCS Phosphate.
Evening events include a children’s tractor pull, Rib Fest, polka lessons and contest, hog calling contest, street dance to Cactus Hill and fireworks sponsored by Granneman Agency and the Syracuse Volunteer Fire Department.
Sunday, July 10, will include a morning community worship service and a noon meal and ice cream social at St. John’s UCC.
Not a Germanfest event, but also upcoming this weekend is a Civil War program on Sunday.
During 2011 Americans across the nation are commemorating the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War. Otoe County Museum of Memories is sponsoring “A Nation Divided” in memory of that anniversary.
The program will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 10, in the tent at 6th and Plum Street in Syracuse.
The three-part presentation will begin with Bill Hayes, director at Mayhew Cabin, explaining the state of the nation in 1861 and the causes of the war. Shirley Gilfert of the Museum will examine the Battle of Shiloh, and Judy Schwab, also of the Museum, will share some of the facts about the aftermath of the long bloody war
