The Syracuse Volunteer Fire Department’s public education committee is starting off the New Year with a new campaign entitled “Tag, You’re it.” Darin Lintner of the fire department said, “The idea just kind of came to us. We’re pretty excited about it.” The campaign started on Dec. 31 when a group of four eighth grade girls placed bags of information on the doors of Syracuse residents living in the Linden View area.
“Inside the bag is information on a lot of different diverse information to use,” said Lintner. He said that the information ranges from fire safety to winter safety. “Behind all of it, it says ‘Tag, you’re it.’ The idea is that you get what you want from it and then you give it to someone you care about,” said Lintner. He said that inside the bag is a map that divides the town into blocks.
They’re asking people to put their address on a sheet of paper and when the information in the bag is running low the bag will be returned to the fire department and refilled to go on someone else’s door.
Sarah Antes, one of the eighth grade students helping with distribution, said, “We’re spreading around fire safety materials so that the people of Syracuse can be more safe as a community.”
“The goal is to use a little bit of material and cover a lot of people,” said Lintner. “Hopefully they give it to their neighbors and they’ll give it to their neighbors and it will just snowball.”
The group of girls involved was enthusiastic to be helping with the new campaign. “We’re just happy to help out,” said Antes.
Lintner said that this safety campaign is unlike any other that is going on. “This innovative campaign will hopefully be a success and a potential community model for other cities to adopt,” he said.
