Otoe County commissioners agreed last Tuesday to consider a $15,000 request intended to guarantee that Nebraska City and Syracuse museums will be open and admission be free to residents.
Brian Volkmer of the Nebraska City Museum Alliance said the county’s contribution, matched by $15,000 from the city’s LB840 economic development fund, will provide $3,000 for museums in Nebraska City and the Otoe County Museum of Memories in Syracuse.
The money will be used to ensure that the attractions are open at least four days per week and four hours per day. Admission fees, normally $3 for adults and $1 for children, will be waived for residents who provide identification.
Volkmer said the idea is intended to encourage residents to bring their guests to the attractions.
Volkmer said the admission fee can become prohibitive when a resident has relatives in town. Under the resident program, only the out-of-county guests are charged an admission.
Volkmer said the there is normally a $1,000 membership fee for the museum association, but the fee will be waived for the Otoe County Museum of Memories. He said the association expects to help the Syracuse-based attraction acquire funding for a new roof and air conditioning system.
Nebraska City attractions expected to participate include Arbor Lodge, Nelson House and GAR Civil War Museum. He said staff hours at the Wildwood Historic Home already receive city support.
He also told commissioners that water damage caused by a broken water pipe this winter at the Freighters Museum caused “minimal damage” to exhibits. He expects the museum to be open by March.
