The Otoe County Board of Commissioners are scheduled to meet at 8 a.m. on Friday regarding decisions on property tax appeals.
Otoe County Assessor Therese Gruber mailed out change of tax valuation notices to 5,000 landowners and the county received 120 protests.
Board Chairman Tim Nelsen said he reviewed each protest and changes were made in about 5 percent of them.
The largest change resulted from a Wal-Mart protest. Wal-Mart protested a $6.5 million valuation on its Nebraska City building and suggested a valuation of $4.8 million.
Nelsen said he will propose a valuation of $5.9 million to the county board at its 8 a.m. meeting Friday.
Nelsen said other successful valuation changes involved the Farm Service Agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Both Otoe County and the FSA keep maps of land in agricultural production.
Nelsen said if there are differences in the map, the county will accept the FSA map for valuation purposes.
Trombino said she expects the county’s total property valuation to increase by $50 million this year.
Nelsen said there are no other buildings like the Wal-Mart building in Otoe County, so rather than basing valuation on buildings here the retailer asked that its buildng be compared to other Wal-Mart buildings.
