“I know it sounds corny and a little bit ridiculous maybe, but as I was sitting at the computer trying desperately to write this speech so it would actually mean something, I thought of this song.”

Jacob Royal, Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca High School salutatorian for the class of 2011, was defending his choice to quote the song “The Climb,” by Miley Cyrus, in his salutatory address to the graduating class of 2011 at the commencement ceremony on May 14.

His quote, “There's always going to be another mountain. I'm always going to want to make it move. It's always going to be an uphill battle. Sometimes we're going to have to lose. It ain’t about how fast I get there; ain’t about what's waiting on the other side. It's the climb,” he said embodied what he was trying to say.

“When you think about it, life is always going to be a battle and I'm not saying someone’s going to come at you with an axe every day, even though that would be interesting,” he joked. “But there will always be something. What would life be like without these obstacles trying to keep us down? Pretty boring in my opinion,” he said.

In Rachel Clymer's valedictorian address to her class she said, “Are you willing to push yourself? Are you willing to push the boundary? The answer I know you'll all give is yes. I know this because each and every one of you has a dream, a passion, a hope, a desire and the only way you can achieve that is by dedicating yourself to that goal and pushing yourself to reach it.”

As each graduate received their diploma, Clymer's final words still lingered in everyone’s minds.

“Remember the future you have wished for yourself and don't ever give up. Fight for what you want and fight for what you deserve. Congratulations and good luck class of 2011.”
