Ameritas representatives Jay Spearman and Marc Mumford told county commissioners June 23 that all of the bonds have been sold for Otoe County’s road improvement program.

Spearman said Eric Conrad of Edward D. Jones, 613 Central Ave., sold $500,000 and Ameritas sold $2 million. He said all of the bonds were sold in Otoe County.

The county will pay $225,000 a year through 2024 to repay the debt.

The total debt linked in 2008 to the county’s $1.3 billion taxable valuation was $45 million. Of that amount, about half was owed by the Nebraska City school district. The Syracuse school district owed $10 million. The Waverly school district had about $1 million in debt linked to Otoe County.

The city of Nebraska City owed $3.8 million, Syracuse owed $1.5 million, Douglas owed $230,000 and Palmyra owed $20,000.

The largest taxpayers in 2008 were Northern Natural Gas, National Arbor Day Foundation, Elster American Meter, Excel Corporation, Wal-Mart Real Estate, Union Pacific Railroad, James Properties, Magellan Ammonia Pipeline and Natural Gas Pipeline.

About 78 percent of Otoe County’s retail sales in 2008 came from Nebraska City.
