The Veterans of Foreign Wars Mid-County Post #5547 and the American Legion Massie-Richards Post #100 held their Memorial Day services at Park Hill Cemetery in Syracuse.

The Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca School Band, grades 8-11, provided a musical prelude to the ceremony.

The Memorial Day address was given by retired Brigadier General Roma J. Amundson, the former assis- tant adjutant general for the state of Nebraska.

The wind seemed to increase in speed and inten- sity during her address, as if the cemetery was affirming her plea to the audience to remember the soldiers buried there.

She said, “Men and women have been galvanized by courage, patriotism and love of country to serve in our nation’s military forces, and in the 235 years of our nation, hundreds of thousands of men and women have given their lives.”

The flags unfurled strong and proud and the wind howled as Amundson con- tinued, “We meet at this cemetery right now, where Syracuse has erected this war memorial, to remember the fallen warriors who gave their lives to preserve and protect our nation as a constitutional republic that offers its citizens the freedom and rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

The Star Spangled Banner was sang by Erin Poe, The Syracuse High School band director. Pastor Fred Anderson gave the invocation.

General Logan's Orders were read by the 2010 Boys’ State representatives Owen Bond, Bryan Morrissey and Tyler Wellman. The Gettysburg Address was read by Allison Moore, and Stephanie Rodgers read In Flanders Field. Moore and Rodgers were the 2010 Girls’ State representatives.

Wreaths were placed at the memorial by representatives of the American Legion Auxiliary, the VFW Auxiliary and Boy Scout Troop #337. A firing squad gave its
salute, “Taps” was played and Anderson gave the benediction, signaling the end of the ceremony.
