As area farmers get into the full swing of the fall harvest, first through fourth graders from around Otoe County learned valuable and timely lessons about farm safety last week.
The S-D-A and Nebraska City Lourdes FFA chapters hosted the 14th annual Progressive Agriculture Farm Safety Day Friday, Oct. 2, at the Kimmel Event Center in Syracuse.
Local experts and FFA students covered safety topics such as ATV safety, disability awareness, grain safety, roadway safety, chemical safety, tractor safety and fire safety.
Bernard Geschke, international coordinator for the Progressive Agriculture Foundation, was on hand to introduce the program to three representatives from Argentina.
Geschke, a former instructor at Nebraska City Lourdes, said the Farm Safety program continues to spread to different countries with the help of sponsors and additional safety materials.  Besides the United States, the program is also in Canada, the U.S. Virgin Islands and American Samoa.  Geschke said around 100,000 students and volunteers participate in Farm Safety Day each year.
The Foundation provides training, safety information, T-shirts and take-home bags at no charge.
