The 2010-2011 music year for Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca High School came to an end on May 9 with a music banquet held in the Middle School commons area.
Instructor Erin Poe commended students for their hard work over the past year and said goodbye to the senior members of choir and band. “This is by far the hardest year that I've had to do this,” she said.
“I know it sounds corny and a little bit ridiculous maybe, but as I was sitting at the computer trying desperately to write this speech so it would actually mean something, I thought of this song.”
Jacob Royal, Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca High School salutatorian for the class of 2011, was defending his choice to quote the song “The Climb,” by Miley Cyrus, in his salutatory address to the graduating class of 2011 at the commencement ceremony on May 14.

Syracuse has a history of growth. According to past census data, the only ten year period that Syracuse recorded a population drop was from 1900 to 1910 when the population dropped from 861 to 842. Since then Syracuse's population has been at an upward climb.

55 years ago, Ridge Acre Farms of Ole LeSeur of Steinauer showed both the champion bull and female at the Hereford show. The champion bull sold for $600.
55 years ago, Syracuse defeated Peru Prep, 75-43, in the last regular basketball season game and the following Tuesday hit the Bobkittens, 56-49, in the final round of the class C district tournament at Louisville. Waverly beat Mead, Shubert downed Weeping Water and Lousville topped Omaha Sacred Heart in other first round games.
65 years ago, about 900 jammed the school gym for the finals of the county basketball tournament. There were 769 paid admissions.
When Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca students race their cars in the upcoming Power Drive race, they will also be raising awareness for causes they support.
The race is March 26 in Lincoln.
