Bridal Guide’s web site features a story listing “48 Heartwarming Proposal Stories,” with the top story being a proposal on Christmas Eve.
Just such a proposal played out right here in Nebraska City on Dec. 24 as former Nebraska City resident Travis Davis asked his girlfriend, Alabama native Mikayla Holliday, to marry him during a visit to the Whispering Bench at Arbor Lodge State Park.
Travis was born in Nebraska City and attended school here through the first semester of his freshman year. His step dad got a job in Alabama, so Travis moved to Harvest, Ala., just outside of Huntsville.
He finished high school there, met and began dating Mikayla.
After graduating high school in 2015, Travis started college at the University of Alabama—Huntsville where he is working toward a teaching degree. He plans to teach high school music. Mikayla also has a college plan in place.
She hopes to transfer to UA-H in the fall and is working toward a degree and career in psychology.
With the couple being close, Travis started making a plan for the perfect proposal. And Arbor Lodge made perfect sense as a location.
“I just remember growing up. In my childhood, one of the best places to visit was Arbor Lodge,” Travis said.
Memories of going to the park, playing on the playground equipment right behind the Whispering Bench and trading secret conversations with friends had meant a lot to the former Citian.
“It’s kind of something that has stuck with me through the years,” Travis said.
With the proposal site decided, Travis just needed to work on the logistics.
To make his proposal plan work, Travis enlisted the help of his grandma, Shalleen Davis.
Travis and Mikayla had plans to be in Nebraska City for the holidays and Shalleen, a photographer who lives in Lorton, would help Travis set up his story.
Travis and Mikayla were going to Arbor Lodge State Park to take a few pictures.
“That was my cover story,” Travis said.
