911 dispatchers received a report of a car on fire in a garage at the Richard Anderson residence at 1207 S. 16th Rd. at 5:24 p.m.
Unadilla, Douglas and Burr firefighters were dispatched and first responders reported 14 minutes later that the house was fully involved in flames.
Unadilla Fire Chief Steve Vodicka said, "We got a good initial attack in, we got a good knock down, but then it got to the attic on us and it went through the attack faster than my crew could work on it." He also stated that he was able to see the flames from Unadilla, 9 miles away, before leaving the station.
Vodicka said that it took 45 minutes to get the blaze under control.
“I knew it was going to be a fight getting in there,” said Vodicka. “Syracuse and Unadilla both did the interior attack and they did a fantastic job.”
The Red Cross was on their way to the site at the time of Vodicka’s statements, but he said that Anderson had a place to stay that night and would be helped by the Red Cross concerning long-term plans.
