Another Groundhog Celebration is in the books!
Activities at the gym were fairly well attended although only about 50 people came to listen to Don Ulrich give his presentation on Vietnam. Of course with the weather being what it was and the change in time, it wasn't totally unexpected.
Most vendors did well. Groundhog cupcakes made an appearance at the Christian Church bake sale.
Short Story winners were: Rachel Grisell, first; and Hannah Crownover, Emma Porter and Jaysa Zoller tied for second. Poster winners were Aprille Johnson, third grade, first place; Skylar Schweitzer and Shelby Ryan, third grade, tied for second place. In fourth grade, first place went to Reagen Petersen and second place, Jaysa Zoller.
Winner of the commemorative rifle was Steve Vodicka. A huge "thank you" to those who contributed for the Silent Auction. Those who won auction items can pick them up at the Village Office.
Although the crowd was smaller than last year, just more than 300, we still had 26 entries in the parade, and the decent temperature of 34 degrees with overcast skies and the wind was calm. Thanks to Bill Farmer and Perry Stoner for announcing the parade entries and to Rochelle Rohlfs for serving as the grand marshal. The Color Guard from the Syracuse Post led the way. Wilhelm Family Farms won the parade contest with "Green Groundhog Eater"; tied for second was "Groundhog Off Spring" and "Hula Hog Island" and third place went to the "Sixth Grade Band.”
While the parade was passing by, the soup and jerky judges were busy sampling the entries. Winners of the soup contest, chili division, were Jeremy Wilhelm, first place for "A Chili Worth Dying For," and second place went to Jan Moore for "White Bean Chicken Chili.” In the vegetable division, Ninajean Rohlfs won for "Comfort Vegetable Soup.” Rochelle Rohlfs was the winner in the “other” division with "Rueben Soup," and Jeanie Steinkuhler took second place with "Tomato Tortellini.” Soup judges were Paul Wallman, Gary Royal and Jill Scheeler, assisted by Maureen Vogt and Barb Wilhelm.
Winners in the Jerky contest were: Jeremy Wilhelm, first place, "Spicy Beef Jerky"; second place, Tony Engelbrecht, "Unadilla's Best" and third place, Travis Walters, "Mesquite Jerky.” Jerky judges were Gabe Meints, Aaron Rule and Jason Hurt, assisted by Michele Hillman. For a freewill contribution, those present could taste the entries.
From the pack of 10 loyal Groundhog supporters, Karla Zahn and Bob Wilhelm were crowned King and Queen of the Groundhog Realm during a ceremony at The Bar. These two lifelong Unadilla residents will reign until next year's festivities, raising $3,144 for Unadilla Fire & Rescue. Music at the Duncan Building was provided by Ninajean and Brady Rohlfs. Groundhog Poker made a comeback and "The One Man Band" entertained in the evening. Area 51 opened doors on buildings A & B to welcome out-of-towners and former residents.
The Unadilla Area Foundation would like to say a special thank you to all the hard working volunteers and participants who made the celebration possible, and to David Swanson and April Isaacs for their great photos. See you next year!
