Layton Burkhart, 80, of Huxley, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 11, 2016, at home in Huxley.
Layton Linn Burkhart was born on July 8, 1936, in Ogden, the son of David and Ada (Johnson) Burkhart. He graduated from Ogden High School in 1954.
On Oct. 27, 1954, Layton was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart Phyllis Darlene Carter in Ogden. He farmed in Ogden before moving to the Ames area to work as an electrician. Layton finished his career retiring from Iowa State University.
He had many hobbies including lapidary, woodworking, hunting, fishing and gardening.
Layton was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Dennis Burkhart, and a grandson.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Phyllis Burkhart; son, Raymond Burkhart; two daughters, Terry Hoff (Mike McDonald) and Coralee (Mohamad) Homsi; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and one sister, Nyla Good.
Layton’s wishes were to be cremated. A celebration of life service will be at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2016, at Leonard Good Community Center in Ogden. Rev. Gary Hoyt will officiate. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Ogden. Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. until service. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
