Former U.S. Senator Bob Kerrey, who is currently traveling in India with his family, commented to the News-Press and Journal-Democrat about Sen. Ben Nelson's decision not to run for re-election.
"Ben's retirement is a huge loss for Nebraska,” Kerrey wrote. “I am saddened by his decision, am grateful for his years of service, and wish him only the best.”
Kerrey held the Senate seat before Nelson, and his own decision not to run for re-election nearly 12 years ago prompted Nelson to campaign for the position.
Speculations about Kerrey throwing his hat in the ring run rampant, but he isn’t ready to make a statement about the prospect.
Nelson’s announcement is worrying Democrats on a national level because of the narrow majority they hold in the Senate.
The senator is the only Democrat representing Nebraska at the nation’s capitol.
