Ernie Gross, 93, of Syracuse, died April 26, 2011 in Lincoln. He
was born Aug. 9, 1917, in rural Burr to Charles and Minnie (Neeman) Gross.
Ernie married Naomi Vohs on Oct. 25, 1940 at Papillion. They lived on the Gross home place in rural Burr until moving into Syracuse in 1963.
He was a man of few words, loving and caring and extremely devoted to his family.
During his more than 50 years of square dance calling, Ernie was awarded the Half Century Award and inducted into the Hall of Fame for his outstanding service to the square dance community. But his biggest enjoyment in life was working on his farm east of Burr. After retiring he enjoyed his morning coffee group, playing cards, traveling and camping with his many friends.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Naomi; daughter Susan McClatchey of Whittier, N.C.; daughter-in-law Connie Gross of Goodyear, Ariz.; grandson Jon Royal of Hiawatha, Kan.; granddaughter Kristi Goode and husband Denny, of Phoenix; great grandchildren Rebecca and Jonathan Royal; sister Dortha Gross and Ruby Peterson of Syracuse; nieces and nephews, and many special friends.
He was preceded in death by sisters Esther Schreiner and Kay Frances; brother LeRoy Gross; and son Kenny.
A celebration of life is Saturday, April 30, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Syracuse.
Interment is at Park Hill Cemetery
Visitation is April 29 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 6-8 p.m. at the Funeral Home.
